Stay toasty, friends!
Braving the cold for some fresh air? Here are some tips to keep you warm and cozy outside!
There’s No Such Thing as Bad Weather, Only Unsuitable Clothing
As the mercury dips and the chill sets in, it might seem tempting to hibernate indoors.
But let's not forget the joys (and health benefits) of stepping outside, even in colder weather. You know I’m going to nag you to get outside, right???
“It’s too cold” might be true, but we humans still need to soak up some Vitamin D every single day.
So, how will you stay warm enough to make your time outside more delightful than freeze-you-to-the-bone cold?
I put together a quick list of ways to beat the cold while enjoying the great outdoors:
Layer Up: Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat at bay, add an insulating layer (like fleece or wool), and top it off with a windproof and waterproof outer layer.
Protect Extremities: Your hands, feet, and ears are most susceptible to the cold. Don't skimp on quality gloves, insulated socks, and a warm hat or earmuffs. My alpaca hat is my favorite - not itchy, just warm… and goofy.
Choose the Right Footwear: Waterproof, insulated boots are a must to keep your feet warm and dry, especially if you're walking on snow or wet surfaces.
Keep Moving: Stay active to generate body heat. If you're sitting outside, try doing some light exercises like toe-taps or arm circles.
Hot Beverages: A thermos of hot tea, coffee, or soup can work wonders in keeping your core temperature up.
Use Hand Warmers: Portable hand warmers are a great addition to your winter gear, especially for longer stints outdoors. I’ve used these and they’re crazy effective. But I’m also eyeballing the rechargeable kind.
Cover Your Face: If it’s seriously cold, know that a scarf or a face mask can protect your face from biting winds and help warm the air you breathe.
Stay Dry: Wet clothes lose their insulating properties. If you start to sweat, unzip your jacket a bit to let some air in.
Fuel Up: Eating a good meal before heading out can help raise your body temperature. Foods high in healthy fats are particularly good for generating heat.
Know When to Go In: Listen to your body. If you start feeling too cold, it's time to head back inside.
Embracing the outdoors during winter can be invigorating and refreshing. With these tips, you'll be well-equipped to enjoy the crisp air without the shivers.
Stay warm and enjoy the beauty of the season!
